What is Latanoprost
Latanoprost was developed by Dr. Carl B. Camras and his research adviser Dr. László Z. Bitó at Columbia University in 1996.
Latanoprost is known by the brand name of Xalatan manufactured by Pfizer. Xalatan is also available in generic form and made by several different manufacturers. The generic version of Latanoprost works as the same effective and safe as the brand name medications.
Latanoprost Eye Drops
Latanoprost comes as the eye drop form in a sterile bottle. Latanoprost eye drop is usually applied to the eyes once a day.
Latanoprost belongs to the class called prostaglandin analogs. It is effective in lowering the pressure inside eye (intraocular pressure, or IOP) by increasing the removal of fluid from the eye. Lowering high pressure in the eye helps to prevent blindness. Bimatoprost, Latanoprost and Travoprost are examples of prostaglandin analogs used as the first line treatment of open angle glaucoma.
Latanoprost comes in one strength as Latanoprost 0.005%, containing 2.5 ml in each bottle, with 1.5 mcg of medication in each drop.
